Developing Capacities Around The Globe

WAITRO aims to increase the ability of individuals and institutions to undertake high-quality research and to engage with the wider community of stakeholders. We enable our members to be more responsive to the needs in their own countries and to participate more effectively in the global research agenda. WAITRO provides a network to collaborate and communicate with, enabling best practices to be shared via WAITRO’s linkages. A demand-driven capacity development approach serves to have a lasting impact by identifying the specific needs before developing capabilities through WAITRO’s various activities.

We employ participatory and collaborative learning methods to enhance competencies and abilities in our workshops. They equip participants to face future challenges and achieve their goals in thematic focus areas.

In-depth trainings focus on the acquisition of specific skills and know-how. Participants learn how to carry out specific operations und how to use new tools that will increase the efficiency of their work through hands-on sessions.

Equipping individuals to train others in their organization maximizes the benefit of WAITRO’s rich R&D expertise and empowers WAITRO members to apply skills and know-how to their local context.

Pairing two organizations for twinning activities like peer-to-peer exchange (see WAITRO Fellowship Program), coaching, mentoring and on-site visits facilitates the effective sharing of lessons learnt and best practices.

Institutional Capacity Development

Investing in capacities on the systemic level creates impactful transformations that work to solve complex challenges. Strengthening capacities in leadership, know-how and advocacy for the integration of research into policy and practice is indispensable for RTOs to master the ever-changing conditions of working in international R&D. Developing new organizational forms and operational processes to continuously work as efficiently and effectively as possible is an investment in the future sustainability of the organization.

Creating Lasting Impact

WAITRO has initiated several successful workshops in the past to enhance the capacities of its members. Recently, WAITRO’s skills and knowledge on SMEs was the focus of a large Benchmarking project. Frequently, WAITRO members also use their expertise in R&D to strengthen capabilities of external stakeholders.

Individual Capacity Development

Every researcher of an RTO contributes to the performance of their organization and is instrumental in stimulating change. Fostering operational capacities like adaptability and strategic thinking of individuals, as well as expanding expertise in specific areas benefits the purpose of RTOs to create innovative technology. Building individual capacities imparts a sense of responsibility and ownership that boosts renewed commitment and enthusiasm.
