Officially Leading LIPI, Laksana Tri Handoko to Target Three Priority Programs

Jakarta, Public Relations LIPI. The Minister of Research, Technology and Higher Education (Menristekdikti) RI, Mohamad Nasir officially inaugurated an Indonesian physicist, Laksana Tri Handoko as the Chairman of the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) replacing the Acting Chairman of LIPI, Bambang Subiyanto on Thursday (31/5/2018) afternoon, at the Central Auditorium LIPI Jakarta.

Handoko, the nickname of Laksana Tri Handoko, became the new Chairman of LIPI after going through a long process of open selection of the Chairman of LIPI to be sworn in at this time. After officially served as the Chairman of LIPI, what are the priority programs that Handoko will do soon?

To the media colleagues after the inauguration, Handoko said, there are at least three priority programs that need to be implemented by LIPI. Firstly, continuing the improvement of research management in internal LIPI following global norms and standards.

Secondly, accelerating capacity building and research competencies through increased qualification of human resources, massive diaspora recruitment, and collaboration with domestic and foreign partners.

And thirdly, increasing the role of LIPI as a provider of national research infrastructure (human resources and hardware or software), and collaborative hubs for science-based creative activities open to all parties (academics, students and industry).

Furthermore, Handoko detailed that LIPI is now changing the internal process of the organization. "This is the first thing I have to finish. Then research management in internal LIPI, to fit global standards. After that, we will improve the quality of human resources including diaspora recruitment and improve collaboration with all partners. Opening all infrastructure in LIPI to be used by everyone. So that it can be established collaboration naturally," he explained.

As for LIPI reorganization, Handoko has a target to complete before August 2018. "As for the diaspora recruitment, it actually started three years ago and many diaspora are financed overseas schools, some with scholarships from outside. However, there is no place (for diaspora) to return. I think LIPI is not the only one, but one place for them to take part in their field," he said.

Related to the era of industrial revolution 4.0, Handoko saw that the research infrastructure should be used by everyone. Not only LIPI people, but there is an interaction with academics, colleges, students, and industries that would be better. "The point is that using technology requires collaboration to be able to compete. Because, we are still limited in the number of people and facilities," he said.

He stressed that the novelty of research must be global and cannot be done alone. Research must involve many parties. Therefore, Handoko is determined to make the research facility can be used for everyone, especially to encourage the existing research competition in Indonesia.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Research, Technology, and Higher Education of the Republic of Indonesia (Menristekdikti), Mohamad Nasir, at the inauguration ceremony, hoped that the inauguration of Laksana Tri Handoko as the Chairman of LIPI will bring LIPI towards a better change and promote Indonesian science and technology. "Moreover, we are now facing the era of industrial revolution 4.0, then this is a serious challenge for the new Chairman of LIPI," he said.

Therefore, Minister Nasir always encourages the Chairman of LIPI to work harder to improve the quality of research in LIPI and Indonesia. In addition, he reminded LIPI to maintain public trust to become an institution that has a dignity in order to improve the quality of existing knowledge in Indonesia, both from the field of science and technology and the field of natural and social sciences.

Menristekdikti also advised Handoko to create good governance. "This will be the main demands to be made, such as transparency, awareness, accountability, and responsibility," Nasir pressed.

On the other hand, Minister Nasir reminded that the success of the program that has been run by the previous Chairman of LIPI to be continued again. "I would also like to thank the Acting Chairman of LIPI, Mr. Bambang, who replaced the late Mr. Iskandar Zulkarnain. Their services as a precursor hopefully get the reward of Allah SWT and need to be followed," he said.

Meanwhile, the previous Acting Chairman of LIPI, Bambang Subiyanto expressed gratitude and congratulations on the election of the new Chairman of LIPI and grateful for the appreciation of Menristekdikti. "I hope Mr. Handoko will be able to bring LIPI and science and technology in Indonesia to be more advanced again. Because, being the Chairman of LIPI should be visionary and able to put science and technology into an important part of this country," said Bambang.
