WAITRO Research Fellowship Programme in the Area of Chemical Sciences
The main objective of the WAITRO Research Fellowship Programme (WRFP) is to introduce young researchers and scientists in the early stage of their careers to research opportunities at well-established Centres of Excellence that are from WAITRO member organisations.
The collaboration with the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) was based on the Joint Cooperation Agreement signed on May 30, 2008. On June 11, 2008 a Memorandum of Agreement was signed with the Research Center for Chemistry, Indonesian Institute of Sciences (RCChem-LIPI) to be the service provider for the WRFP 2008.
The duration of the Fellowship was for nine weeks and it was carried out by RCChem at two locations namely in Serpong and Bandung, Indonesia. A total of nine participants from eight member organsations were selected from a pool of twenty applications from 12 member organisations.
The WRFP was conducted bu resource persons from RCChem led by its Director, Dr. L. B. S. Kardono. the WRFP commenced from October 21 to December 18, 2008 with the programme scheduled in three phases. For the first five weeks, the participants attended a training, a Workshop on Metrology in Chemistry and a Seminar on Nanotechnology. The training was based on the participants' chemistry backgrounds and qualifications.
Subsequently, the participants carried out projects of their choices in the laboratories at RCChem-LIPI in Seprong and Bandung for three weeks. In the final week of the programme, the participants presented the results of their projects and were evaluated by WAITRO and RCChem-LIPI.
It was evident that the WRFP achieved its objectives in imparting knowledge and developing skills, as well as providing opportunities for these young researchers and scientists to share experience, network amonsgt themselves and carry out project collaboration.
